MARGARET HOOKS has written extensively on the life and work of artists, among them Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti and Edward James. Her writing has appeared in ARTnews,Vogue,The Guardian, Afterimage, Elle, Grand Street,The Observer magazine,The Photograph Collector, Luna Cornea and other publications.

During the 1990s Hooks lived in Mexico City where she was a correspondent for The Irish Times and then for ARTnews magazine. In 1998, she became a Contributing Editor for ARTnews. Her books include an award-winning biography of Tina Modotti which is available in eight languages and has been optioned by leading film companies.

She became interested in the life of the English surrealist Edward James while working in Mexico and has published articles about his life and work in Grand Street, ARTnews and Gatopardo. Her book Surreal Eden is the first major book to be published on Edward James and his surrealist masterwork in Xilitla called Las Pozas .

Hooks curated exhibits on the work of Tina Modotti in Paris and San Francisco, was a Reviewer of portfolios at Fotofest in Houston, served on the Advisory Board of the Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museum and the Editorial Board of Luna Cornea magazine. She is a founding member of the Advisory Board of the Xilitla Foundation which is responsible for the restoration and preservation of Las Pozas.
