Margaret Hooks has written extensively on the life and work of artists, among them Frida Kahlo, Tina Modotti and Edward James. Her writing has appeared in many publications, such as ARTnews, Vogue,The Guardian, Afterimage, Elle, Grand Street ,The Observer magazine and The Photograph Collector. During the 1990s, Hooks lived and worked in Mexico City where she was initially the correspondent for The Irish Times and then for ARTnews magazine. She moved to Miami as a Contributing Editor for ARTnews in 1998. Her books include the award-winning biography of Tina Modotti which was nominated for the prestigious Infinity Award. It is now available in seven languages and has been optioned by leading Hollywood film companies with Hooks being hired to write the film treatment based on her book. She became interested in the life and work of the English surrealist Edward James while in Mexico and has published articles on him for Grand Street, ARTnews and Gatopardo. Her book Surreal Eden: Edward James & Las Pozas was published to critical acclaim in 2006 - it is the first to be written on James and the creating of his surreal masterwork in the Mexican jungle. Hooks is a member of the Author's Guild, New York and the Writers Guild of America East. She has been guest curator of exhibitions on Tina Modotti in Paris and in San Francisco and has served on the Advisory Board of the Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City, the Juried Artists Selection Committee at the Art Center of South Florida, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the Xilitla Foundation which recently acquired Las Pozas. She has traveled widely in Asia & the Americas; lived in New York, London, Mexico City & Miami. |
